The Animal Identification Numbering Management System (AINM) is a Web-based program used to track the manufacture and issuance of Animal Identification Numbers (AIN) under the National Animal Identification System (NAIS). AINs are unique 15-digit numbers assigned to identify animals individually to support state and federal animal-disease monitoring and surveillance programs. AINs may also be used by industry for performance recording or breed registration or other programs they provide.

Distribution of AINs currently is limited to the cattle industry and several disease programs, but will expand to other species as appropriate identification methods and standards are established through the respective species working groups and the NAIS Subcommittee.

AIN tag manufacturers, managers and resellers can access the AIN Management System through the USDA eAuthentication system. Similar to a debit card PIN number, eAuthentication is an identity verification system used to grant access to multiple USDA online applications.

The National Animal Identification System (NAIS) is a national program intended to identify specific animals in the United States and record their movement over their lifespans. It is being developed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and State agencies - in cooperation with industry - to enable 48-hour traceback of the movements of any diseased or exposed animal. This will help to ensure rapid disease containment and maximum protection of America's animals.
